Sex and Violence Evaluation Lab Application

The Sexuality & Violence Evaluation (SAVE) Lab, housed in the Department of Psychology at York University (https://savelab.ca/), is a clinical-research lab focused on preventing sexual violence and other forms of harm. Our goal is to advance tools, practices, and policies that strengthen community safety, reduce harm, and support rehabilitation. Members of the lab regularly engage with challenging material, including case files, legal documents, and research on sexual offending and victimization. We emphasize a professional, respectful environment where difficult topics are approached with rigor, ethical clarity, and attention to personal well-being.

Lab members—whether research assistants or graduate students—contribute directly to the success of our projects. Responsibilities may include data management, coding of case materials, conducting literature reviews, preparing training and knowledge-translation resources, and supporting ongoing research studies. Members also take part in lab meetings, presentations, and discussions of applied forensic issues. Accuracy, confidentiality, and professionalism are essential. Everyone in the lab is expected to approach sensitive material objectively, uphold privacy and ethical standards, and seek clarification or support when needed. Transparency, accountability, and teamwork form the foundation of our work.

What defines a strong SAVE Lab member is not only prior knowledge, but the right balance of skills, curiosity, and character. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively are key. Equally important are openness to feedback, willingness to learn new methods, and respect for diverse perspectives. Given the sensitive nature of our research, we look for individuals who can balance professionalism with empathy, who take initiative while understanding the scope of their role, and who are motivated by the chance to contribute to meaningful improvements in the justice system.
